    This isn’t a lucrative business. Being a director for the now successful King Street Gallery, our 22 yr. old gallery didn’t achieve profit for the first 13 yrs. (this is normal).

    Our costs are immense and vast, we must earn in excess of $130,000 each year to remain competitive. Rent is 1,200 per month. Advertising is extremely difficult given the hundreds of galleries in the CBD alone. That is to say, differentiation in the public sphere is near impossible.

    You’ve committed an atrocity to oversimplify such a complex business that is the commercial gallery.

    Firstly, there are many other minimal requirements such as registration. For Australian galleries, you must be a registered valuer with the taxation department and member of the Aus. commercial galleries association.

    thank you very much. im pursuing this kind of business. but is it true i can charge the artist’s artworks to 30%-40% of the final price. or are you saying that i’ll add 30%-40% to the final price of the artist and me has dealed?
